Ceramic coating,
honestly

A ceramic coating is chemical protection and gloss. It is not armour, it is not scratch-proof, and it will not stop a rock. What it does do, it does for years instead of weeks. Here is exactly what XPEL FUSION PLUS handles, what it does not, and what the warranty quietly asks of you.

What a coating actually stops

Most disappointment with ceramic coating comes from expecting it to do a film's job. Pick something Florida throws at your paint and see honestly which product handles it — coating, film, or neither.

Threat check

Choose what you are worried about

Option 01

Ceramic coating

No

A coating is measured in microns. It cannot absorb an impact.

Option 02

Paint protection film

Yes

Self-healing urethane takes the hit instead of your clear coat.

Option 03

Bare clear coat

No

Nothing between the gravel and your paint.

General guidance for a healthy factory finish. Coverage in every case depends on how quickly contamination is removed and how the vehicle is washed.

What we install

Two coatings, one decision

We install XPEL FUSION PLUS in two grades. Same family of chemistry, same install standard, different service life and different warranty commitment. The right one depends on how long you are keeping the car.

Fusion+ Lite Entry

1 YRLIMITED WARRANTY

The honest introduction to coating. Real hydrophobic performance and real gloss, at the price point where it makes sense to try it rather than commit to it.

  • Water and grime release, so washing gets faster
  • Added clarity and depth over paint or PPF
  • Resists staining and chemical etching
  • Shorter service life than Classic

Best for: a lease, a car you are selling inside two years, or a first coating you want to evaluate before spending more.

Fusion+ Classic Most installed

4 YRLIMITED WARRANTY

XPEL's most popular coating and what most of our clients leave with. The warranty term is long enough to be worth the prep it demands underneath.

  • Everything Lite does, held for four years
  • Warranted against oxidation, loss of gloss, UV damage, bug impacts, colour fading, acid rain and chalking
  • Bonds over bare paint or over XPEL PPF
  • Requires an annual inspection to stay valid

Best for: a car you are keeping, a new delivery, or anything already wearing paint protection film.

FUSION PLUS also comes in dedicated formulas for wheels and calipers, exterior glass, plastic and trim, and interior upholstery. Those are quoted per surface, and they are usually worth adding to wheels and glass regardless of which paint tier you choose.

Straight answers

What it will not do for you

We would rather you know this before you spend the money than find out in the parking lot.

Hardness

9H is not scratch-proof

The 9H figure comes from a pencil hardness test used across the coatings industry. It means the cured surface resists light marring better than bare clear coat. It does not mean a shopping cart bounces off.

Impact

It will not stop a rock chip

Coating is chemical protection. Film is physical protection. They solve different problems, which is why plenty of our clients run both — coating applied over the film on the panels that need it.

Self-healing

Coating does not self-heal

Self-healing is a property of urethane film, not ceramic. If light swirls closing up with heat is what you are picturing, you are picturing PPF.

Prep

It locks in what is underneath

A coating is optically clear and it seals the surface as found. Existing swirls, etching and oxidation get sealed in and often look more obvious, not less. That is why correction is quoted separately and honestly.

Maintenance

You still have to wash it

A coating makes washing faster and far less damaging. It does not make it optional. Bugs and droppings still land, they just release with far less effort and without scrubbing swirls into your paint.

Fresh paint

New paint has to gas out

If a panel has been resprayed, the paint needs time to fully cure before anything seals it. Tell us about any body work when you book, and we will confirm the window with your shop rather than guess.

The part most shops leave out

The FUSION PLUS warranty is not automatic once you pay. It requires an annual inspection by an XPEL certified installer — in practice, the shop that applied it — completed within 30 days before or after your installation anniversary, every year of the term. Miss the window and the coverage is void. The inspection usually includes a wash, decontamination and a condition check, and it is billed separately. We schedule yours before you leave.

The install

You are paying for the prep

Applying the coating is the fastest part of the day. Everything that determines how it looks and how long it lasts happens before the bottle is opened.

What happens to your car, in order
01 · Assess We inspect the paint in controlled light and tell you what is actually there — swirls, etching, previous polishing, failing clear coat. This is where we tell you if correction is needed, and what it will and will not fix.
02 · Wash & decontaminate Hand wash, then chemical and mechanical decontamination including a clay treatment. Embedded brake dust, industrial fallout, sap and mineral deposits do not come off with soap, and anything left behind gets sealed under the coating.
03 · Correct Machine polishing to level the clear coat and remove defects. Quoted separately, because the amount needed depends entirely on your paint. Skipping it is a valid choice — we will just show you what you are locking in first.
04 · Panel wipe A final wipe-down with an alcohol and water solution strips every polishing oil and residue off the surface. Coating will not bond properly through leftover product, and this step is where rushed installs fail.
05 · Apply FUSION PLUS is applied by hand in small sections, allowed to flash, then levelled with fresh microfibre. Bonding happens at a molecular level with the surface, which is what separates a coating from a sealant sitting on top.
06 · Cure & hand back The surface needs at least 6 hours before it gets wet, and continues hardening toward 9H over the following 3 days. You leave with written aftercare and your first inspection already on the calendar.

Living with it

The first week, then forever

FIRST 6 HOURS

Keep it dry

No water on the coated surfaces. Park inside if you can, and stay out of the rain.

FIRST 3 DAYS

No chemicals

The coating is still hardening toward full cure. No soaps, no detail sprays, and keep it out from under trees and sprinklers.

ONGOING

Hand wash only

pH-neutral soap, two buckets, a clean mitt, top down. Automatic brush washes will mar a coated car the same way they mar an uncoated one.

ONGOING

Retire the wax

Wax and glaze sit on top of the coating and dull the effect you paid for. Use a ceramic booster instead if you want to top it up.

EVERY 12 MONTHS

Bring it back

The annual inspection that keeps your warranty alive. Within 30 days either side of the install date, every year of the term.

Where it fits

How it attaches Bonds to the surface at a molecular level Adhesive-backed urethane over the panel Sits on top of the paint
Realistic lifespan Years — 1 or 4 year warranty depending on grade Years, with a manufacturer warranty Weeks to months
Can be combined Yes — coating is routinely applied over film, giving impact protection and hydrophobic gloss on the same panel. Not recommended over a coating

Questions we get daily

Ceramic coating, answered

Lite or Classic — which should I actually get?

It comes down to how long the car is staying with you. Lite carries a one year warranty and makes sense on a lease, a car you are selling soon, or a first coating you want to judge for yourself before spending more.

Classic carries four years and is what most of our clients leave with. Once you are paying for full prep and correction anyway, the longer term is usually the better value per year.

Does my paint need correction first?

Usually, but not always. A coating is clear and it seals the surface exactly as it finds it, so existing swirls and etching get locked in and can read more obviously under the added gloss.

We assess the paint in proper light before quoting anything, and correction is priced separately. Even cars delivered straight from a dealer often need some. If you would rather skip it, that is your call — we will show you what you are sealing in first.

How long is my car in the shop?

It depends almost entirely on paint condition and how much correction is involved. A straightforward coating on a new car is quicker than a multi-stage correction on a neglected finish.

You get a firm timeline with your quote once we have seen the vehicle, not a guess over the phone. After application, the surface needs at least six hours before it is exposed to water, which factors into when you collect.

When can I wash it?

Keep the coated surfaces dry for at least six hours, and avoid any soaps, sprays or chemicals for the first three days while it hardens toward full cure. After that, hand wash with a pH-neutral soap.

No automatic brush washes, ever. A brush will mar a coated car just as it mars an uncoated one — the coating resists light marring, it does not make the paint invincible.

Can I put it over paint protection film?

Yes, and it is one of the most common combinations we do. FUSION PLUS bonds to XPEL film as well as to bare paint, adding hydrophobic performance and clarity on top of the impact protection the film is already providing.

You end up with one surface that behaves consistently across coated panels and filmed panels, which also makes washing simpler.

Will it stop love bugs from etching my paint?

It dramatically improves your odds. Bug remains are acidic, and on bare clear coat they can etch within a day or two in Florida heat. A coating resists that chemistry and releases the residue far more easily.

It is not a licence to leave them on. The realistic version is that you get a much wider margin for error, not an unlimited one. Rinse them off when you can.

What about hard water and sprinkler spots?

This is the honest weak point, and it is a real one in Southwest Florida. A coating helps water sheet off rather than sit and evaporate, but if mineral-heavy water dries on a hot panel, it can still leave deposits.

The fix is behavioural rather than chemical: dry the car after washing, and keep it out of irrigation spray. Deposits that do form come off a coated surface far more easily than off bare paint.

Is it worth it, or is it marketing?

It is worth it for what it actually is: years of chemical and UV protection, meaningfully easier washing, and better gloss retention on a car you are keeping. In Florida sun and salt air, the UV and oxidation protection alone is doing real work.

It is not worth it if what you actually want is protection from rock chips, or if you were hoping to stop washing the car. Those are the two expectations that turn into disappointment, and both are solved by a different conversation.
