Coverage is the real decision

Which film matters less than how much of the car it goes on. Damage is not distributed evenly — the front third of the vehicle takes almost everything. These are the coverage levels we quote, and they are a starting point rather than a menu.

Wrapped edges versus cut edges is the other question worth asking any shop. Where the panel allows it, we wrap film around the edge so there is no visible line collecting dirt. Where it does not, we cut to a clean relief. We will tell you which panels get which before we start.

What the warranty actually covers

Ten years sounds absolute. It is a real, strong warranty — but it covers specific failures, and knowing which ones prevents an unpleasant conversation later.

Film defects, for ten years

Yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating, when the film was professionally installed. XPEL covers parts and labour on an approved claim.

Not covered

Your paint underneath

XPEL is direct about this: the warranty applies to the film only. Film is a sacrificial layer. If something gets through it, the paint claim is not an XPEL claim.

Impact damage

Damage from outside forces, including rocks and road debris, is excluded. That is not a loophole — it is the film doing its job. It took the hit. The warranty is against the film failing on its own.

Water spots

Mineral deposits left to dry on film can stain it, and that stain is explicitly excluded. In Southwest Florida, this is the exclusion most likely to affect you. Keep it out of the sprinklers and dry it after washing.

Automatic car washes

Damage from improper wash technique, automatic washes or the wrong tools is excluded. One brush tunnel can undo a five-figure install and the claim will not stand.

Non-XPEL coatings on top

The exclusions list use of non-XPEL branded ceramic coatings. If you want a coating over your film — and it is a good idea — it needs to be XPEL FUSION PLUS to keep the film warranty intact.

The difference nobody mentions at quote time

Ultimate Plus and Stealth warranties transfer to the next owner when they submit proof of the original install date — the new owner gets the remainder of the term. That is a genuine, documentable resale argument. XPEL COLOR is non-transferable. If you are wrapping a car you plan to sell, that difference is worth knowing before you choose the finish, not after.

Living with it

Wash it like paint

First 48 hours	No washing. The adhesive is still setting and the edges need time to bond. You may see slight haze or small moisture pockets in the first days — that is normal and it clears on its own as the film cures.
Hand wash	pH-neutral soap and a soft microfibre mitt, two buckets, top down. This is the whole routine. Film is more forgiving than bare paint, not less.
Pressure washing	Keep the nozzle at least 36 inches from the film, use a wide 40° tip, and never aim directly at an edge. Edge lifting is almost always a pressure washer, not a bad install.
Never	Automatic brush washes, harsh solvents, or abrasive polishes. All three appear in the exclusion list and all three are avoidable.
Self-healing	Light swirls and wash marring close on their own with heat — a sunny afternoon usually does it. Warm water speeds it up if you are impatient.
After body work	Any panel that gets repainted must be re-wrapped to stay covered. Areas left un-wrapped after a repair fall outside the warranty.

Questions we get daily

Film, answered

Is XPEL COLOR just a vinyl wrap?

No, and the difference is structural. Vinyl is a decorative film — thin, not self-healing, and it offers essentially no impact protection. XPEL COLOR is paint protection film that happens to be colored, so it self-heals and carries the same ten year film warranty as the clear product.

The trade-off worth knowing: the COLOR warranty does not transfer to a new owner, where Ultimate Plus and Stealth do.

Will film damage my paint when it comes off?

Not on healthy factory paint removed properly. That is a large part of why film makes sense for leases and for resale — it comes off and reveals the finish it has been protecting.

Film over a respray or over paint that is already failing is a different conversation, and we will have it with you before we install rather than after. If a panel has been repainted, tell us.

Do I have to wrap the whole car?

For clear film, no. Partial or full front coverage protects the areas that actually take impact at a fraction of full body cost, and it is what most of our clients choose.

For Stealth or COLOR it is different. You are changing the finish, so anything less than full body leaves a visible line where the film stops. Those two are effectively full-car decisions.

Can I put ceramic coating over the film?

Yes, and it is a good combination — you get impact protection from the film and easier washing plus extra gloss from the coating.

One condition: XPEL's exclusions specifically list non-XPEL branded ceramic coatings. Use FUSION PLUS over XPEL film and your warranty stays clean. Put a competitor's coating on top and you have handed them a reason to decline a claim.

Will I be able to see the edges?

On a good install, barely, and only if you look for them. Where the panel geometry allows, we wrap the film around the edge so there is no exposed line. Where a wrapped edge is not possible, we cut to a clean, deliberate relief line rather than leaving it ragged.

Edges that lift or peel later are almost always an install problem or a pressure washer aimed the wrong way, not a film problem.

How long will my car be in the shop?

A partial or full front is typically a one day job. Larger coverage and full body work run multiple days, because panels are wrapped individually and the film needs time to settle.

You get a firm timeline with your quote once we have seen the car. Every install is done in house by our own team, never subcontracted.

Does the film yellow over time?

Modern urethane should not. Yellowing was a genuine problem with older generation films; current products use UV inhibitors and a clear topcoat specifically to prevent it, and yellowing is named in the covered defects for ten years.

Florida sun is hard on everything, which is exactly why the warranty term matters here more than it does in a mild climate.

Film or ceramic coating — which first?

If you can only do one and you care about chips, do the film. A coating will not stop a rock, and no amount of gloss fixes a chipped bumper.

If your paint is already flawless and your concern is etching, UV and easier washing, the coating is the better first spend. Most people who do both end up with film on the front and coating over everything.
